My first song

There is this one song. The first one I played on the guitar and sang. My introductory song, my companion—no matter where I went. In strangers’ living rooms, in cafés, at spontaneous sessions with other musicians. It was my anchor, my courage captured in six strings.

Sometimes I ask myself: What would have happened if I had never started playing guitar? If I had never found my voice?

My life would have been different. Completely different. Playing and singing my first songs on the guitar was incredibly important for my personal development. Of course, breakdancing also gave me a lot, but singing was different.

My father always said, “Your voice should be accompanied by the instrument, not the other way around.” That guiding principle has shaped me. To this day. That’s why my stuff sounds different on the instrument.

The breakthrough

Playing the guitar was a breakthrough for me. For years I wanted to sing, but I didn’t dare. I tried rapping, secretly wrote poems and hid them in my room.

But singing – that’s a whole different dimension. When you open your voice, you create a unique connection to creativity. To your own unique power. Every frequency that comes out of your mouth with your eyes closed and completely at one with yourself is a “divine frequency,” as Hildegard von Bingen already knew.

But the person who has influenced me most with Turkish music has always been Selda Bagcan. Probably because my parents always listened to her.

The universal language of singing

Singing is essential in all religions, cultures, and spiritual circles. Whether prayers or mantras, whether in Turkish, German, or a language without words—our voice gives us the strength to live and participate in life.

Of course, there are also people who cannot speak, but they too have their own way of expressing their needs and feelings. Those who want to will always find a way to find their voice.

Finding your own voice and bringing it into this world—in whatever form—is the greatest happiness a person can have. The greatest happiness every free spirit should have.

Your voice is waiting for you

So open your voice and sing, even if it doesn’t sound perfect. You will find your own way to sing and speak in the best possible way. For me, helping people to activate this is a mission. Singing and music bring healing, if we allow them to.

Even in competition or team sports, singing is actually essential. It gives you drive. It connects you with the spirit of your team or even with your ancestors.

Returning to the guitar

I haven’t played the guitar for years, only the bass. It was also an important phase. But now that I’m picking it up again, it feels different. I have a completely different approach to it. With more ease and lightheartedness.

Every instrument has its own soul. Every instrument lets you grow in a different way.
